The Domestic Power Struggle in Turkey and Europe’s Engagement with Turkey
Abstract
Against the background of the public controversy between the AKP-led government and the military in the period 2007–2009 in Turkey, the paper analyses the political situation in the country by investigating three core socio-political components: Kemalism, Islamism and nationalism. Recent developments in these three areas are examined vis-à-vis the role of the AKP Party as well as to what extent they influence the European policies of the country. The paper finally focuses on the repercussions of recent developments in Turkey as a result of Turkey-related European Union policies, and accordingly which challenges they are bound to face in the future.Downloads
