Abstract

The development of Bulgarian studies in Bavaria is connected with the first slavists at the University of Munich, namely, Erich Berneker (1874–1937), Erwin Koschmieder (1896–1977) and Alois Schmaus (1901–1970). They regularly included in their lectures both Bulgarian language and literature, and inspired students to write their dissertations in this field. With the foundation in 1916 of a “Deutsch-Bulgarische Gesellschaft” by Ferdinand Birkner (1868–1944), (as a consequence of the German-Bulgarian alliance) political aspects also became part of the focus. The long-time lecturer of Bulgarian language at the University of Munich, Kyrill Haralampieff (1919–2003), not only offered Bulgarian language courses, he also published dictionaries and handbooks of Bulgarian. Anthologies and monographs also appeared in the new series “Bulgarische Sammlung”, published in Munich after 1980 by Wolfgang Gesemann, Kyrill Haralampieff and Helmut Schaller.
