The Vantage Point of Artists from East Berlin into the People’s Republic of Bulgaria
Abstract
A widespread theory is that Eastern European countries experienced isolated cultural and social developments during the Cold War. A careful study shows that there were some gaps in the Iron Curtain, which interestingly had been made possible and supported in part by the party structures of the socialist regime. In this article the attempt is made to gain an insight into the organization of the Bulgarian art scene during socialism (from 1945 to 1989). The focus is on Bulgarian-German cultural ties. A demonstration of the extent and the mutual stylistic influences and relationships is not the subject of this text. Instead this article intends to rouse interest and create incentives to pursue research in socialist Bulgarian art and its characteristics.
