Very Funny!? Humour as a Narrative Device in Ilija Trojanov’s Novel “The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around Every Corner”
Abstract
This article analyses different variations of literary humour in Ilija Trojanov’s debut novel named “The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around Every Corner”. I examine humoristic phenomena on different levels of the text. Firstly, I analyse the usage of rhetorical figures and relate these to Trojanov’s understanding of the function of language. This analyse is based on recent research results on multilingualism as much as Trojanov’s own statements. Secondly, I interpret and compare satiric, grotesque and parodist episodes of the text and describe their function within the plot of the novel. Subsequently, I outline the narrative construction in order to describe the rogue narrator and his function in the text. I come to the conclusion that the function of Trojanov’s humouristic writing has to be described as an expression of social criticism.
