Europe’s new Balkan?

Abstract

The year of 2015 was the beginning of new migrations, a fact which will turn Germany into the most important country of immigration in Europe. When viewed demographically, culturally, linguistically, and socially, Germany is in a historically new situation. The discussions about the role of the Islam, for example, show this very clearly. The new social conditions are creating some features which are known well from the history of the Balkans. Reflecting on this history, this essay presents that region as a ‘cultural space’ sui generis (‘Kulturraum’) in the Southeast of Europe where many nations, languages, and religions coexisted very closely for a long time. Perhaps there are certain analogies and parallels which can be of some importance for the future of Europe as a whole.
