Candida Candia. A Lament over the Fall of Candia to the Ottomans (1669) and its Author
Abstract
The lament discussed here is a witness to the impression that the fall of Crete in the Ottoman-Venetian War (1669) left in Central Europe. The only copy of this extremely rare text is located in the Bavarian State Library (Munich) and was formerly attributed to the poet and composer of the 17th Century Matthäus Apelles von Löwenstern. Today it is considered to be anonymous. Only the initials M. A. V. L. at the end of the poem have been handed down to us. In this paper a proof is offered that the author of the poem was the Austrian jurist and intellectual Matthias Abele von Lilienberg (Styria, 1616–1677). The author uses loci communes and rhetorical means from his own time, especially from ecclesiastical and religious sources.
