The Ethno-Linguistic Code of a Wedding Ceremony in a Pomak Narrative from the Village Myki (Mustafčevo), Xanthi region
Abstract
This study observes the features of the Pomak language code of a wedding ceremony and the semantic distribution of its components. The article is based on an analysis of the dialect narrative from the Pomak village Myki/Mustafčevo (dist. Xanthi, Greece), which was conducted in order to determine: 1) the distribution tendencies of the elements of the character, subject and action codes; 2) the correlation of the narrative flow with the denotative base; 3) the degree of relevance of sems/semantic fields for the informants and emphase options made by them; 4) restrictions relevant for the informants on the denotative level. In conclusion, it is summarized that the linguistic code of the Pomak wedding ceremony is highly representative as a marker of the preservation of their idiom and cultural particularities. The effectiveness of the analysis used to establish the position of the trilingual population on the ethnolinguistic map of the Balkan Peninsula is emphasized as well.
