Between Cultural-Political Strategy and Theological Interest: Nichifor Crainic’s Honorary Doctorate from the University of Vienna
Abstract
The paper is devoted to a chapter from the history of the Vienna Evangelical Theological Faculty. Based on the honorary doctorate awarded to the Romanian Orthodox theologian Nichifor Crainic on November 5, 1940, by the University of Vienna, the faculty’s conception of itself as a bridge to the Orthodox peoples in Southeast Europe comes into focus. The award, initiated by Dean Gustav Entz, concerned an exponent of the Romanian government oriented towards Nazi Germany, who also belonged to the Antonescus government in 1940/41 as Minister of Propaganda.
Another liaison between Vienna and Orthodoxy is Hans Koch, the theologian and Eastern European historian who habilitated at the Vienna Faculty. As the editor of the relevant journal "Kyrios," Koch analyzed the processes taking place in the Orthodox world. He and Dean Entz expressed the cultural-political importance of the city of Vienna, with its university and the Evangelical Theological Faculty predestined for such times. It was possible to bring individual scholarship holders to Vienna, but subject-specific courses could not be effectively established.
