Digital Storytelling about Chuck Norris in Southeast Europe
Abstract
Digital storytelling about the American martial artist and action actor Chuck Norris is widely popular in all the countries of Southeast Europe. Statements about him, in which his supernatural physical power is thematized, are ironically called “facts” even though they represent quite the opposite of what is real or probable. In these “facts”, Chuck Norris is always the victorious hero. His authority and ability, however, go far beyond physical forces: He defeats higher powers, the pandemic and even death. The coronavirus is afraid of him and not the other way round. The models for the “facts” about Chuck Norris known in Southeast Europe are mostly international narratives, but very often his person is also associated with specific historical and current political and social issues of a Southeast European country or milieu.
