From Longing to Disappointment. On the Semantics of ‘Love’ in the Folk Poetry of South Slavs
Abstract
In this article, emotions of ‘love’ and their effects in the folk poetry of the South Slavs, against the background of the social reality of their bearers are discussed. Related texts belong to a reality of life that can be partially assigned to the 18th and especially the 19th century and to which German folklore up to the present day has paid great attention. As the basis of social behavior which controlled erotic emotions and all relationships within patriarchal society, the concept of “patriarchal shame” is explained. As a result, in the songs of the South Slavs, privacy and love filled with joy are less represented than longing, pain, rejection and disappointment. The article explains the typical composition, meaning and emotionality, as well as motiviational peculiarities and regional differences of lyrical songs, ballads, romances and epic songs.
