“Since Time Immemorial, Glorious and United”: National Historical Images of Orthodox Churches in Southeastern Europe
Abstract
The proximity and close connection between the Orthodox Church and the nation in Southeast Europe is a firmly anchored topic in research. The relationship between orthodoxy and nation appears as a phenomenon of a specific historical context. For both the Romanian and the Serbian Orthodox Church, the connection to the nation had a constitutive character, which also found its way into Orthodox theology. In the article, an attempt is made to shed more light on the background of the relationship between church and nation, firstly by embedding it into the overarching context of church and state in South-Eastern Europe and secondly by the functional description of central historical images using examples from the Romanian and Serbian Orthodox Churches.
