The Butterfly and the Fire. A Love Gift from Count Kapodistrias and its Emblematic Origins
Abstract
To show his eternal love, Count Kapodistrias gives Roxandra Stourdza a ring, which represents a butterfly in flames. The image of the butterfly, which cannot escape the irresistible lure of the devouring light, is traditionally used in emblematics. In the search for a direct source, the present essay will assume the Erotokritos. The novel had a wide distribution in the areas of descent of the persons (Heptanes and Danubian principalities).
