The Banat Republic as a Utopia in the Novel Disco Titanic by Radu Pavel Gheo
Abstract
This article deals with the novel Disco Titanic by the contemporary Romanian writer Radu Pavel Gheo, published in 2016. Among other things, the novel focusses on the subject of the Banat Republic. The article briefly discusses the historical context and then examines the way in which this subject is treated in literature.
The presentation is framed by a text by the Romanian clasical author Ioan Slavici. As an avowed monarchist, Slavici had, after 1918, critically examined the fact that formerly Russian or Austro-Hungarian territories such as the Banat became part of Romania in 1918. In his view, however, they have a clearly distinct historical character.
