Abstract

Due to its very different history, a Romance language has formed in southeastern European Romani, which is rather centrifugal with respect to Latin, its basic and guiding language, and which has developed affinities with the non-Romance languages surrounding it. For the linguistic typological consideration of Romanian, therefore, both its affinities to Western Romance and to the Balkan languages can be used as a basis. Equally interesting, however, is to discover and appreciate the dissimilar in the similar. Building on Latin-Romance material and taking up and integrating suggestions from adstrates and various leading languages, Romanians have developed their language in a constant alternation of preservation and innovation along paths different from those of the ‘Western Romans’.
