Abstract

“The Vampire. A Novel from Bulgaria” (1878) by Hans Wachsenhusen presents an interesting description of the Bulgarian world at the time of the Crimean War. It is, however, not only about the sufferings of a people under foreign rule and the advancing development of its desire for freedom, but rather also about the liberation of people – of the young Bulgarian woman, Marinka, who experiences a freeing from superstition, from a primitive way of thinking, which would be a major hindrance for the harmony of life. Love can conquer all of that, but it is only possible in another country.
