Abstract

This paper seeks to describe the use and the semantic functions of the ethnophaulism "Jugo" as used by the Swiss public during the last three decades. The analysis will be conducted based on a selection of German-language Swiss media reports. According to the relevant literature, an ethnophaulism is a pejorative, derogatory, disparaging and denigrating term for an ethnic group or a set of newly emerged nations. The pejorative term "Jugo" is an abbreviation of 'Yugoslavs' and is considered by the Swiss public as a slur. In this article, the stereotypical characteristics of "Jugo" will be analysed and duly supported by evidence.
