Balkan Research and Insight. An Autobiographical Sketch
Abstract
The following article is based on decades of experience in dealing with Balkan topics, which the author assigns to the micro (Graz or Styrian), meso (Austrian or Habsburg Monarchy) and macro (European) levels. The results of different research, projects and publications, which concern the period from the 18th to the 20th century and all parts of the Balkan region, suggest that more attention should be paid to cross-period, spatial and social contexts in the Balkan studies and that the term “Balkan” should be enriched with new content and interpretative possibilities. Readers gain insight into the reasons why the author encountered the Balkan, which accompanying circumstances played a role and which insights he gradually achieved.
